EVENT Tuesday’s Child airlifts emergency aid to Pakistan - Khan you help?
DATE Tuesday 31st August 2010
The Belfast-based children’s charity Tuesday’s Child invites you to support our airlifts of aid to children affected by the floods in Pakistan.
Teaming up with former Pakistan cricket captain, Imran Khan, also a Tuesday’s Child, and Pakistan Airlines, the charity hopes to reach thousands of children in flood ravaged Pakistan.
A population twice the size of Ireland are now homeless, hungry and dehydrated. Acute diarrhoea and water-borne diseases are rampant and infants and children are at particular risk. People are bewildered and in shock and fear for the survival of their children.
Items urgently needed include: ready-to-eat non-perishable food e.g. peanut butter, cereal bars, bottled water (still), long-life milk, high-energy drinks and juices, baby food, baby formula milk, baby feeding bottles, nappies, blankets (new), lightweight sleeping bags (new), children’s clothes (new) and shoes (new) and rucksacks.
The charity is also asking families here for hampers of ready-to-eat non-perishable food and water and pre-filled rucksacks for babies and children affected by the floods. Details of what to include in the hampers and rucksacks is available on the website at www.tuesdayschild.org.uk. The drop-off point for aid is St Kevin’s Hall, North Queen St, Belfast from Saturday 4th September at 12 noon.
Medicines are also needed especially rehydration salts for diarrhoea e.g. Dioralyte, food supplements, vaccines and mosquito repellants as well as mosquito nets and water-purification tablets.
“The airlift is a great opportunity to get essential items to those suffering on the ground. We are appealing to people across Northern Ireland to reach out and support the initiative. We are also hoping that businesses will donate core relief goods such as food, water, medicines and clothes. A number of businesses are already on board with the appeal, for example Antrim Hills Water, Tipperary Water and Rocwell are all donating bottle water” said Tuesday’s Child chairperson.
Speaking from Pakistan, Imran Khan said “The international community does not seem to grasp the sheer scale of this disaster. We are facing hunger and disease on an unprecedented scale. All help is welcome. Our warm thanks to Tuesday’s Child for their kind effort”.
Aid will be transported to airports in Manchester, Birmingham and London for immediate air transfer by Pakistan airlines who will deliver it to the Imran Khan Flood Relief Foundation FOR mmediate distribution.
People wishing to donate items can phone us at 02890 – 502725 or email us at info@tuesdayschild.org.uk.
The appeal will run for the month of September and Tuesday’s Child hopes to fill as many planes as possible.
